It happens in the supermarket, at bedtime, in the middle of a restaurant. Your toddler goes from zero to full meltdown in seconds — and you're left wondering what on earth just happened.
Tantrums are a completely normal part of toddler development. But that doesn't make them easy. Here are 10 techniques that actually work.
1. Stay Calm Yourself First
Your nervous system regulates theirs. If you escalate, they escalate. Take a slow breath before you respond — even if it's the last thing you feel like doing.
2. Don't Try to Reason Mid-Tantrum
The toddler brain is flooded with emotion and literally cannot process logic right now. Save the explanation for after they've calmed down.
3. Get Down to Their Level
Crouch down so you're eye-to-eye. This simple act communicates safety and connection rather than authority and threat.
4. Name the Feeling
"You're really frustrated right now, aren't you?" Naming the emotion helps the child feel understood and begins to activate the thinking part of their brain.
5. Offer a Hug (Don't Force It)
Some children calm instantly with physical comfort. Offer a hug but don't force it — if they push away, stay close and calm.
6. Use a Calm, Low Voice
Resist the urge to raise your voice. A slow, low, calm voice is far more effective at de-escalating than matching their volume.
7. Give Them a Simple Choice
"Do you want to sit here or come with me?" A small sense of control can interrupt the spiral. Keep choices simple — two options maximum.
8. Distract With Something Interesting
For younger toddlers especially, a sudden change of focus can work wonders. "Oh look at that!" can genuinely reset the moment.
9. Create a Calm-Down Corner
A cosy spot with soft toys, a blanket, or a feelings chart gives your child a safe place to regulate. Make it inviting, not punitive.
10. Acknowledge After the Storm
Once calm, reconnect warmly. "That was really hard, wasn't it? I'm proud of you for calming down." This builds emotional intelligence over time.
