10 Signs Your Dog Is Trying to Tell You Something (And What to Do About It)

Dogs can't speak, but they communicate constantly — through body language, behaviour, and subtle cues that most owners miss. Learning to read your dog is one of the most valuable things you can do as a pet parent.

1. Excessive Licking

A little licking is normal. Constant licking — of paws, furniture, or you — can signal anxiety, allergies, pain, or boredom.

2. Whale Eye (Showing the Whites of Their Eyes)

When a dog shows the whites of their eyes while keeping their head still, they're uncomfortable. This is a stress signal — back off and give them space.

3. Yawning When Not Tired

Dogs yawn when they're stressed or trying to de-escalate a tense situation. If your dog yawns during training or around strangers, they may be overwhelmed.

4. Tail Position and Movement

A wagging tail doesn't always mean happy. A high, stiff wag signals alertness or agitation. A relaxed, mid-height wag is the one you want to see.

5. Refusing Food

A dog that suddenly refuses food is telling you something is off — physically or emotionally. Stress, illness, or a change in environment can all suppress appetite.

6. Destructive Behaviour

Chewing furniture, digging, or shredding things is often a sign of boredom, anxiety, or insufficient exercise. It's not spite — it's communication.

7. Hiding or Withdrawing

If your usually social dog starts hiding or avoiding interaction, they may be in pain, frightened, or unwell. Don't ignore withdrawal.

8. Excessive Barking

Persistent barking at nothing visible can signal anxiety, cognitive changes in older dogs, or a response to sounds you can't hear.

9. Scooting

Dragging their bottom along the floor usually means anal gland discomfort. It needs veterinary attention — don't ignore it.

10. Following You Everywhere

Sudden clinginess can signal anxiety or that your dog isn't feeling well. If it's a new pattern, pay attention.

The more you understand your dog's signals, the stronger your bond — and the faster you can respond when something's wrong.
