Bringing a newborn home is one of the most beautiful — and terrifying — experiences of your life. Every little sound, every unusual movement, every change in breathing can send your heart racing. The truth is, most of the time everything is fine. But sometimes, it isn't. And knowing the difference could save your baby's life.
Here are 5 signs your newborn needs medical attention — and what to do about each one.
1. Difficulty Breathing
Normal newborn breathing can be irregular, but watch for: nostrils flaring, skin pulling in between the ribs with each breath, a bluish tint around the lips or fingertips, or breathing faster than 60 breaths per minute consistently. If you notice any of these, go to the emergency room immediately.
2. High Fever (or No Fever When Sick)
A rectal temperature above 38°C (100.4°F) in a baby under 3 months is a medical emergency — no exceptions. Call your doctor or go to the ER right away. Equally concerning is a baby who seems very unwell but has a low temperature — this can also signal serious infection.
3. Refusing to Feed for More Than 4-6 Hours
Newborns need to feed every 2-3 hours. If your baby is consistently refusing feeds, seems too weak or sleepy to latch, or is producing fewer than 6 wet nappies a day, something may be wrong. Dehydration in newborns can escalate quickly.
4. Unusual Crying — or No Crying at All
A high-pitched, inconsolable cry that sounds different from their normal cry can signal pain or neurological issues. On the flip side, a baby who is unusually quiet, limp, or unresponsive needs immediate attention.
5. Yellow Skin or Eyes (Jaundice)
Some jaundice is normal in the first few days, but if the yellowing is spreading to the belly, arms, or legs — or if your baby is very sleepy and hard to wake — it needs to be assessed by a doctor promptly.
