Every couple fights. The couples who thrive aren't the ones who never argue — they're the ones who've learned to argue well.
Conflict, handled with care, can actually deepen intimacy. It surfaces needs, clarifies boundaries, and creates opportunities for growth. But conflict handled poorly — with contempt, stonewalling, or cruelty — erodes trust over time.
Rule 1: Attack the Problem, Not the Person
There's a world of difference between "This situation is frustrating" and "You always do this." Stay focused on the behaviour or situation, not who they are as a person.
Rule 2: No Bringing Up the Past
If it's not relevant to the current argument, leave it out. Deal with one thing at a time.
Rule 3: Take Breaks When Flooded
When emotions run too high, the brain can't process information well. It's okay to call a time-out. "I need 20 minutes, then I want to come back to this."
Rule 4: Use "I" Statements
"I feel unheard when..." lands very differently from "You never listen." "I" statements express your experience without putting your partner on the defensive.
Rule 5: Listen to Understand, Not to Respond
Try to listen with the goal of genuinely understanding your partner's perspective — even if you disagree. Reflect back what you heard before responding.
Rule 6: Repair Early
Gottman research shows that successful couples make "repair attempts" during conflict — small gestures that de-escalate tension. A touch on the arm, a moment of humour, "I don't want to fight, I want to understand you."
Rule 7: End with Connection
Don't let arguments end in cold silence. End with something connective: "I love you even when we disagree." "Can we hug?"
Conflict isn't the enemy of love. Contempt is. Learn to fight with respect, and your relationship will be stronger for it.
