Burnout doesn't arrive all at once. It creeps in slowly — a little more tired than usual, a little less motivated, a little more irritable — until one day you realise you're running on empty and you can't remember the last time you felt like yourself.
Here's how to recognise burnout and, more importantly, how to recover from it.
Signs You May Be Burnt Out
Burnout goes beyond ordinary tiredness. Watch for these signs:
• Exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix — You wake up tired no matter how long you slept.
• Cynicism and detachment — Things that used to matter feel pointless.
• Reduced performance — Simple tasks feel overwhelming. Concentration is difficult.
• Physical symptoms — Headaches, stomach issues, frequent illness as your immune system weakens.
• Emotional numbness — You feel disconnected from people you love.
• Dread — A persistent sense of dread about the day ahead.
If three or more of these resonate, burnout is likely.
How to Recover
Step 1: Acknowledge It
Burnout doesn't get better by pushing through. The first step is admitting that something needs to change — not next month, now.
Step 2: Remove or Reduce the Source
Identify the primary drain. Is it work overload? A toxic relationship? Lack of boundaries? Recovery is impossible if you're still standing in the fire. Even small reductions in the source make a significant difference.
Step 3: Prioritise Sleep Above Everything
Sleep is the foundation of recovery. Before you add anything to your routine, protect your sleep. 7-9 hours, consistent bedtime, no screens before bed. Everything else builds on this.
Step 4: Do One Restorative Thing Daily
Not productive. Not useful. Restorative. A walk in nature, reading for pleasure, a long bath, cooking something you love. Your nervous system needs inputs that feel safe and enjoyable.
Step 5: Talk to Someone
Burnout thrives in isolation. Tell someone you trust how you're really feeling. If burnout is severe, speaking to a doctor or therapist is not weakness — it's wisdom.
Step 6: Rebuild Slowly
Recovery from burnout is measured in weeks and months, not days. Be patient with yourself. Small improvements compound. You will feel like yourself again.
